This theatre can seat 383 people. It offers all sorts of shows, like exciting plays, funny comedy acts, live music, and fun family shows. They also have workshops and classes where you can learn new skills!

An Grianán Theatre is a key place for many festivals each year. It's a main partner for the Earagail Arts Festival in July. It also helps with the Irish Aerial Dance Fest in June and the Letterkenny Trad Week in January. The theatre even hosted the big traditional music festival, Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann, twice!

The theatre's name comes from Grianán of Aileach, an ancient stone fort nearby. This fort is thought to be super old, dating back to about 1700 BC!

A Look Back: The Theatre's Story

How An Grianán Theatre Began

The idea for An Grianán Theatre started in 1995. A politician named Seán Maloney suggested to the Minister for the Arts, Michael D. Higgins, that he should see a special spot in Letterkenny. Mr. Higgins visited the place, called the Rectory Field, and loved it! He said it was the best place he had ever seen for a theatre.

Because he liked it so much, he approved a grant of £1.5 million in February 1996. This money helped make An Grianán Theatre a reality. A group called the North West Theatre Project then started a big fundraising effort in March 1997 to gather more money.

Opening Its Doors

An Grianán Theatre first opened its doors to the public on Monday, October 4, 1999. The official opening party happened a bit later, on November 12, 1999. The very first show performed on its stage was called Magic of the Musicals.

Special Events and Awards

The theatre has hosted many important events. It welcomed Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann, a huge traditional Irish music festival, in the summers of 2005 and 2006. In 2007, it also hosted the Pan Celtic Festival, which celebrates Celtic culture.

An Grianán Theatre has won some cool awards too! In 2007, a design studio that worked on the theatre's look won a European Design Award. In 2013, it was named the IMRO Ulster Music Venue of The Year. This award recognized it as the best music venue in the Ulster region. The theatre also won an award in 2015 for being very easy for people with disabilities to access.
