Ana de Castro Osório (born June 18, 1872 – died March 23, 1935) was an important Portuguese writer and activist. She worked hard to gain more rights for women. She also supported the idea of a republic for Portugal. A republic is a country where people elect their leaders instead of having a king or queen.

Early Life and Family

Ana de Castro Osório was born on June 18, 1872, into a wealthy family. Her mother was Mariana Osório de Castro Cabral e Albuquerque. Her father was Judge João Baptista de Castro. Ana loved reading books from her parents' huge library. This love for books helped her become a writer. She started writing when she was 23 years old. In 1889, Ana married Paulino de Oliveira. He was a poet who also believed in a republic. They had two children together.

Fighting for Women's Rights

Ana de Castro Osório was a strong voice for women's rights in Portugal. She believed women should have the same opportunities as men.

Writing for Change

In 1905, Ana wrote an important book called Às Mulheres Portuguesas. This means To Portuguese Women. It was a manifesto, which is a public statement of beliefs. In this book, she explained why educated women needed to be more involved in politics. She also showed how women's groups and the fight for women's rights were connected to the idea of a republic.

Starting Women's Groups

Ana helped create many groups for women. In 1907, she started the first feminist group in Portugal. It was called the Portuguese Group of Feminist Studies.

A year later, in 1908, she joined with Adelaide Cabete and Fausta Pinto de Gama. Together, they founded the Portuguese Women's Republican League. This group wanted to end the monarchy, which is when a country is ruled by a king or queen. They played a big part in Portugal becoming a republic in 1910.

In 1911, Ana led another group. It was called the Portuguese Feminist Propaganda Association. Adelaide Cabete and Carolina Beatriz Ângelo had founded this group.

International Work

Ana de Castro Osório also worked with women from other countries. In June 1913, she traveled to Budapest. She was part of the Portuguese group at a big meeting. This meeting was the Seventh Conference of the International Woman Suffrage Alliance. This alliance worked to get women the right to vote around the world. Other important women with her were Ana Augusta de Castilho, Beatriz Pinheiro, Luthgarda de Caires, Joana de Almeida Nogueira, and Maria Veleda.

Supporting the War Effort

In 1917, Ana helped start the Portuguese Women's Crusade. This group encouraged women to help with the war effort. They wanted women to be active and support their country during wartime.
