Life of Carolina Beatriz Ângelo
Carolina Beatriz Ângelo worked as a doctor in Lisbon, Portugal. She strongly believed in equal rights for women. People who believe in equal rights for women are called feminists.
She was also a suffragette. This means she worked hard to get women the right to vote. Carolina joined many groups that supported women's rights.
She was a leader in the Portuguese Women's Republican League. In 1911, she helped start a new group. It was called the Portuguese Association of Feminist Propaganda.
How Carolina Ângelo Voted
On May 28, 1911, Carolina Ângelo did something amazing. She cast her vote in an election. This was the first election after Portugal became a republic.
The law at that time said that literate people over 21 could vote. It also said they had to be a "head-of-household." The law did not say only men could vote.
Carolina was a widow and had a daughter. This meant she was the head of her household. She used this rule to argue for her right to vote. The election officials agreed, and she voted!
Her brave act was big news. People all over Portugal talked about it. Feminist groups in other countries also heard about her.
However, the government changed the law soon after. On July 3, 1913, a new law was passed. It clearly stated that only male citizens could vote. They still had to be literate and over 21.
