Anaconda, Missouri facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Anaconda is a small, quiet place in southern Franklin County, Missouri, United States. It's called an unincorporated community, which means it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town does. You can find Anaconda southeast of Interstate 44, located between the towns of St. Clair and Stanton.

A Look Back: The History of Anaconda

This community has had a few different names over the years! Before it was called Anaconda, it was known as Dry Branch and later Morrellton.

Why the Names Changed

  • Dry Branch: This name came from a nearby stream called Dry Branch creek.
  • Morrellton: This name was given to honor a man named Mr. Morrell. He was an important official for the railroad.
  • Anaconda: The current name might have come from Anaconda, Montana, another place far away.

The Post Office Story

A post office was first opened in this community in 1858, and it was called Dry Branch. Then, for a short time from 1892 to 1893, the post office was renamed Anaconda. After that, in 1893, it changed again to Morrellton. The Morrellton post office stayed open for many years until it finally closed down in 1953.

A Stop on the Railroad

Anaconda was also an important stop along the St. Louis–San Francisco Railway line. This means trains would pass through and sometimes stop there, connecting the community to other places.

How Many People Lived There?

In 1925, Anaconda was a small community with about 110 people living there.
