Anaphalis (pronounced A-ná-pha-lis) is a group of plants. These plants are often called Pearly everlasting because of their pretty, pearl-like flowers. They belong to the Asteraceae family, which also includes daisies and sunflowers.
There are about 110 different types, or species, of Anaphalis. Most of them grow naturally in central and southern Asia. One well-known species is the Western Pearly Everlasting (Anaphalis margaritacea). This plant grows in North America and is popular in gardens.
Some Anaphalis species are found in special places. For example, A. javanica and A. longifolia grow on the mountains of Java island in Indonesia. A. javanica is also known as the Javanese Edelweiss. Sadly, this beautiful plant is currently an endangered species. This means it is at risk of disappearing forever.
