Life and Career
Early Life and Education
Anatoliy Matviyenko was born in Bershad, a town in Vinnytsia Oblast, Ukraine, on March 22, 1953. He came from a working-class family. In 1975, he finished his studies at the Lviv Agrarian Institute. He studied how to use machines in farming.
Starting in Politics
From 1975 to 1977, Matviyenko worked as a mechanic in Bershad. In 1977, he became active in a youth organization called Komsomol. He quickly moved up, becoming a secretary of its Central Committee by 1985. From 1989 to 1991, he was the top leader of the Ukrainian Komsomol. During this time, he also joined the Communist Party of Ukraine.
In 1990, Anatoliy Matviyenko was elected to the Ukrainian parliament for the first time. This was a major step in his political career.
Becoming a Leader
From 1996 to 1998, Matviyenko served as the Governor of Vinnytsia Oblast. This meant he was in charge of the Vinnytsia region. In February 1996, he became a leader of a new group called the People's Democratic Party.
Matviyenko was elected to the Ukrainian parliament again in 1998. He led his party's group in parliament. However, he later left this party. In December 1999, he helped create a new party called the Ukrainian Republican Party "Sobor". He became its first leader. In 2001, he joined a group that was against the then-president, Leonid Kuchma.
Key Government Roles
In 2002, Matviyenko was elected to parliament as part of the Yulia Tymoshenko Bloc. He was second on their list of candidates, right after Yulia Tymoshenko herself.
From April to September 2005, Matviyenko held a very important job: he was the Prime Minister of Crimea. Crimea is a region in Ukraine. He resigned from this role because his party members did not support a candidate for the Prime Minister of Ukraine.
Later Parliamentary Terms
Matviyenko worked briefly for the President of Ukraine, Viktor Yushchenko, in early 2006. He was then elected to parliament again in 2006, representing the Our Ukraine Bloc. He was re-elected for a sixth time in 2007 with the Our Ukraine–People's Self-Defense Bloc.
In the 2012 election, he ran as an independent candidate but decided to step aside to support another candidate. In 2014, he was elected to parliament once more, this time with the Petro Poroshenko Bloc.
In October 2016, it was reported that he owned a private church.
Family and Passing
Anatoliy Matviyenko passed away on May 22, 2020, at the age of 67. He was married to Olha and had two sons, Viktor and Pavlo.
