Anatoly Petrovich Sukhorukov (Russian: Анато́лий Петро́вич Сухору́ков, born November 29, 1935 – died April 10, 2014) was an important physicist from Russia. He made big discoveries about how waves behave. His work helped us understand and use light, radio waves, and sound in new ways.

Life and Education

Anatoly Sukhorukov was born in Moscow, Russia. He was a very bright student. In 1961, he graduated with top honors from Moscow State University (MSU). He studied the physics of waves and vibrations.

After working for three years, he returned to MSU in 1963. He started his PhD studies there. In 1967, he earned his PhD. His research was about how light beams change in special materials. His teacher was the famous scientist R. V. Khokhlov.

In 1974, he earned a higher degree called a "Doctor of Sciences." This degree is like a second, advanced PhD. His work focused on how wave beams and pulses act in different materials. By 1977, he became a full professor at MSU.

Career at Moscow State University

Anatoly Sukhorukov spent most of his career at MSU. He started as an engineer in 1966. Then he became a lecturer and later a full professor. From 1984 to 1989, he led the Division of Radiophysics and Electronics.

He also served as the Dean of the Faculty of Physics from 1989 to 1992. This is a very important leadership role. From 1988 until his death in 2014, he was the head of the Chair of Photonics and Microwave Physics. This department studies light and radio waves.

Amazing Science Discoveries

Anatoly Sukhorukov made huge contributions to the study of waves. He focused on how waves interact in special ways. This includes light waves, radio waves, and sound waves. His most important work was in a field called nonlinear optics.

Understanding Nonlinear Optics

He was one of the first to develop the modern ideas of nonlinear optics. This field studies what happens when light passes through materials in a powerful way. The light can change the material, and the material can change the light.

He studied "self-focusing," where a light beam can narrow down on its own. He also looked at "parametric interactions." This is when different light waves can create new waves or change each other. Many of his ideas were later proven true in experiments.

For example, he predicted how light beams would behave in certain materials. He also showed how to make laser beams better. His work helped create new ways to control light. This has led to improvements in lasers and other optical technologies.

Waves and Solitons

Anatoly Sukhorukov also studied how light pulses travel. He found a special link between light beams and light pulses. He predicted "parametric solitons." These are special light waves that keep their shape as they travel. They were first predicted in 1974 and proven in experiments in 1995.

He also discovered "mutual focusing." This is when three different light beams can focus together. His research helped us understand how to create and use these special light structures. This has applications in areas like optical communication.

His work covered many areas. He studied how light interacts with different materials. He also looked at how to make light change its frequency. His ideas helped improve many optical devices.

Teaching and Mentoring

Anatoly Sukhorukov was also a dedicated teacher. He spent a lot of time educating students. He was known as one of the best lecturers at the Faculty of Physics. For over 40 years, he taught a popular course called "Theory of Waves."

He also co-wrote a textbook for this course. It became a very important book for students and researchers. He helped create a scientific school at MSU. This school focused on how waves interact in complex materials.

He guided many students throughout their studies. He supervised over 80 graduate students. He also helped 36 students earn their PhDs. Eight more students completed their advanced "Doctor of Sciences" degrees under his guidance. He also organized yearly workshops for young scientists.
