Ancell, Missouri facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Ancell was a small town in Scott County, Missouri, in the U.S. state of Missouri. It no longer exists as a separate town. Today, Ancell is part of a larger city called Scott City, Missouri.

Ancell: A Town That Joined Others

Ancell was named after Pashal Ancell, an early settler in the area. Before it was called Ancell, the town was known by a different name: Glenn.

How Ancell Grew

Many towns, including Ancell, grew because of the railroads. When railroads were built through the area, new communities often formed along the tracks. These towns needed places for workers and services.

Around the early 1900s, several towns in this part of Missouri became official towns, which is called "incorporating."

  • Fornfelt, which was first known as Edna, became an official town in 1905.
  • Illmo, located on the Missouri side of a bridge connecting Missouri and Illinois, became an official town in 1906.
  • Ancell, located just west of Illmo, became an official town in 1907.

Becoming Part of Scott City

Over time, these smaller towns decided to join together to form a larger city. This process is called a "consolidation" or "merger."

  • In 1960, Ancell joined with Fornfelt. Together, they formed the new city called Scott City.
  • Later, in 1980, Illmo also joined Scott City. This created the Scott City we know today, which includes what used to be Ancell, Fornfelt, and Illmo.

Ancell's Post Office

Ancell had its own post office, which opened in 1912. It served the community for many years. The post office stayed open until Ancell merged with Fornfelt in 1960 to become part of Scott City.

Ancell Cemetery

Even though the town of Ancell no longer exists, there is still a place that carries its name: Ancell Cemetery. This cemetery is located about 5 miles south of Scott City.
