What the Store Looks Like
The Anderson Brothers Store is a wooden building with one and a half stories. It has a smaller section on the north side and a barn attached to the back. The front of the building faces east. It has a part that sticks out with big bay windows. These windows are on either side of the main entrance. The roof over this part is flat and low.
Special Features of the Building
The main roof of the store has a gable that faces the front. A large cross gable sticks out on the south side. The smaller section on the north has a flat roof and a "false front." This means the front wall goes up higher than the roof. The long south side of the building has another door in the middle. It also has several windows that are not evenly spaced. The barn at the back has a large door that slides open on a track. Inside the store, the walls and ceiling are covered with original wood panels. These panels fit together like a puzzle.
History of the Anderson Brothers Store
The main part of the store was built around 1901. Two brothers, John and Lewis Anderson, built it. It became the first general store in Stockholm. By 1915, the store had grown bigger. The north section was added to hold the local post office. The front part that sticks out was also added around this time.
Changes in Ownership
The partnership between the brothers ended in 1910. After that, Lewis Anderson ran the store by himself until 1918. From 1918 through the 1950s, several different people owned and operated the store. In 1976, the local historical society bought the building. They now use it to display their museum collection. This helps people learn about the town's past.
National Recognition
The Anderson Brothers Store is a very important historical site. It was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places on January 11, 2001. This listing helps protect the building and recognize its importance.
