The Anderson Brothers Store is a really old building in Stockholm, Maine, United States. It was built way back in 1901. This building was the very first general store in town! A general store is like an old-fashioned shop that sold almost everything. It was the only old shop left in Stockholm. The store was open until the 1950s. Today, it's a museum for the Stockholm Historical Society.

What is the Anderson Brothers Store?

The Anderson Brothers Store is a historic building made of wood. It has one and a half stories. There's also a smaller part (a wing) on the north side. A barn is attached to the back of the building. The front of the store faces east. It has a part that sticks out with cool bay windows. These windows are on either side of the main door. The roof above this part is flat. The main roof has a pointed shape (gable roof). The inside of the building still has its original wooden walls and ceiling. These are made with special tongue-and-groove wood.

How the Store Started

The main part of the store was built around 1901. Two brothers, John and Lewis Anderson, built it. It was the first general store in Stockholm. Imagine, before this, there wasn't a central place to buy things!

Growing and Changing

By 1915, the store had gotten bigger. They added the north wing. This new part was used to hold the local post office. The front part of the store that sticks out was also added around this time. In 1910, the brothers decided to go their separate ways. Lewis Anderson then ran the store by himself until 1918.

New Owners and a New Purpose

After Lewis Anderson, different people owned and ran the store. It kept operating as a general store until the 1950s. That's a long time for a shop to be open! In 1976, the local historical society bought the building. Now, it's a museum! It holds many old items and stories from Stockholm's past.

A Special Place in History

Because of its history and how well it has been kept, the Anderson Brothers Store is very important. It was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places on January 11, 2001. This means it's recognized as a special historical landmark.
