Anderson Landing is a small place in Coahoma County, Mississippi, United States. It is an unincorporated community. This means it is a place where people live, but it does not have its own local government like a city or town. Instead, it is managed by the county.
Anderson Landing is located right next to Desoto Lake. Before 1942, Desoto Lake was actually part of the big Mississippi River. At that time, Anderson Landing was a busy riverport. A riverport is a place on a river where boats can load and unload goods. It was on the south side of a curve in the river called "Sunflower Bend."
History
Early Days and Cotton Shipping
In the 1890s, Anderson Landing was part of a large farm known as Wilkerson's Plantation. A plantation was a big farm that grew crops like cotton. The landing was very important for shipping cotton from the plantation. Boats would carry the cotton away to other places.
Changing the River's Path
A big change happened in 1942. The United States Army Corps of Engineers decided to change the path of the Mississippi River. This group is responsible for building and managing waterways and other projects. They cut off "Sunflower Bend" from the main river.
When the river's path was changed, the old bend became a separate body of water. This new lake is called an oxbow lake. It gets its name because it often looks like the U-shaped collar worn by an ox. This new oxbow lake was named Desoto Lake.
