History of Andersonville
Andersonville has an interesting past! It was first called Lewisville. This name was given when the town was created in 1851 by a man named Mahlon Anderson.
From Lewisville to Andersonville
The community got its current name, Andersonville, when a post office opened there in 1873. This post office helped people send and receive mail. It stayed open until 1901.
A Busy Canal Town
Long ago, Andersonville was an important "port town." This means it was a busy place on the Ohio and Erie Canal. Canals are like man-made rivers that boats use to travel. Being on the canal helped Andersonville grow because goods and people could easily move in and out of the community.
