The first person to settle in this area was Joshua Stapp in 1857. He built a log building that served as both a school and a church for the community. This was an important place for early settlers to learn and gather.
How Andice Got Its Name
The name "Andice" has an interesting story! In 1876, Andrew Jackson, who owned a small store, became the postmaster for the Berry's Creek post office. This post office operated until 1879.
Later, in 1899, a man named Rev. William Isaac Newton wanted to open a new post office. He wanted to name it after his newborn son, Audice. However, postal officials misread the name on his application. They thought he wrote "Andice" instead of "Audice," and that's the name they approved!
Today, most people say "an-dice" when they pronounce the town's name. But if you talk to older people who have lived there a long time, they might say "an-diss." This pronunciation is closer to the original name "Audice."
