The Andover Hook and Ladder Company Building is an old and important fire station located in Andover, Maine. This historic building served the town for many years. It is a special example of an early 20th-century fire station. Today, it helps us remember the history of fire protection in small towns.

What the Building Looks Like

The Andover Hook and Ladder Company Building is a long, narrow building. It has two stories and is made of wood. The outside is covered with metal siding that looks like bricks. This siding is believed to be the original material.

Front and Sides

The front of the building has a large opening on the first floor. This opening is now covered by a modern garage door. Next to it, there is a small rectangular window. On the second floor, there are two windows spaced far apart. Each side of the building has five windows on the second floor. The east side also has one window on the first floor.

Back and Inside

At the back of the building, you'll see two windows. Between them is a tall hose tower. This tower rises above the main roof. Inside, the first floor is an open space. The walls here are covered with fiberboard, which was added later. The upper floor has three rooms. A staircase at the back leads up through part of the hose tower.

History of the Fire Station

The Andover Hook and Ladder Company started in 1890. Its job was to protect the small town of Andover from fires. In 1904, part of an older building was moved to this spot. Then, a much larger section was added to create the building we see today.

Years of Service

This building was actively used as a fire station for a long time. Firefighters worked here until 1987. After that, it was no longer needed as a full-time fire station.

Current Use

Today, the building is used for storage by the local historical society. Sometimes, it also hosts community meetings. It is one of the few old rural fire stations from that time period still standing in Maine.

National Historic Listing

The Andover Hook and Ladder Company Building is very important. Because of its history and unique design, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This happened on January 11, 2001. Being on this list means it is recognized as a special historic site. It helps protect the building for future generations.
