André Cymone (born Andre Simon Anderson on June 27, 1958) is an American musician. He is known as a bassist, songwriter, and record producer. He played bass guitar for the famous musician Prince's touring band. This was before Prince's band became known as The Revolution.

In 1981, André Cymone left Prince's band to start his own music career. He released several successful albums. These included Livin' in the New Wave, Survivin' in the 80's, and A.C.. His music blended new wave and funk styles. This mix led to many hit R&B songs. One of his most famous songs, "The Dance Electric," was written by Prince. It reached number 10 on the R&B music charts in 1985.

Later, Cymone helped write and produce hit songs for other artists. This included songs for Jody Watley, like "Looking for a New Love" and "Real Love". Many people believe Cymone helped shape the unique "Minneapolis sound" in music.

His stage name, Cymone, comes from a different spelling of his middle name, Simon.

André Cymone's Life Story

Early Life and Music Beginnings

André Cymone was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota. His father, Fred Anderson, was a musician. His mother, Bernadette, was a social worker. André was the youngest of six children.

A young Prince also lived with the Anderson family. Prince had left his own home. Prince's cousin, Charles Smith, started a band called Grand Central. André Cymone was invited to join this band. His sister Linda and Morris Day were also in the group. They later changed their name to Champagne. Around 1975, Cymone and Prince also joined a funk band called 94 East.

André Cymone's Music Career

In the late 1970s, Prince released his first album, For You. Prince then asked André Cymone to be the bassist for his touring band. Cymone played with Prince until 1981. He left the band due to some disagreements with Prince.

Later, Cymone and Prince worked out their differences. Cymone then released three solo albums. These were Livin' In The New Wave (1982), Survivin' in the 80's (1983), and AC (1985). For a long time, these albums were hard to find. But now, all three have been updated and include extra songs. His biggest hit song as a solo artist was "The Dance Electric." Prince wrote this song for him.

Cymone became a successful music producer. He is well-known for producing music for Jody Watley. They were married and have a son together. He also produced and wrote songs for many other artists. These include Evelyn "Champagne" King, Pebbles, Jermaine Stewart, The Girls, Pretty Poison, and Adam Ant. In 1988, Cymone produced three songs for Phil Thornalley's album, Swamp.

His song "Better Way," sung by James Ingram, was featured on the Beverly Hills Cop II movie soundtrack in 1987. In the late 1980s, Cymone took a break from the music spotlight. He wanted to focus on raising his children. He also worked on different writing projects.
