Andre Lamond Adams (born March 11, 1970), who is known by his stage name Andre Nickatina, is an American rapper and record producer from San Francisco, California. A rapper is an artist who performs rhymes over a beat, and a record producer helps create the music. Nickatina is famous for his unique voice and creative style of rapping. Andre Adams was born on March 11, 1970, in San Francisco. He grew up in the city's Fillmore District, a neighborhood with a rich musical history.
Music Career
Getting Started as Dre Dog
Andre Nickatina began his journey in the Bay Area rap world in 1993. At that time, he used the stage name Dre Dog. Under this name, he released two albums: The New Jim Jones in 1993 and I Hate You With a Passion in 1995. His second album was successful, reaching #79 on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.
Becoming Andre Nickatina
In 1997, Adams decided to change his stage name to Andre Nickatina. He felt the new name was a positive change for his career. That same year, he started his own record label called Filmoe Coleman Records. This allowed him to have more control over his music.
He released the albums ... Raps and Raven in My Eyes. The album Raven in My Eyes was praised for its great sound quality. It mixed electronic sounds from keyboards with live instruments.
Gaining Fame
Nickatina's next few albums helped him become a well-known artist in the West Coast's underground rap scene. Underground rap refers to music that is not part of the mainstream but has a strong, dedicated group of fans.
In 2003, he released a project that was both an album and a movie, called Conversation with a Devil. In 2005, the newspaper SF Weekly named Nickatina the "Best Local Hip Hop Legend." That same year, he won the Best Underground Artist award at the first Bay Area Raps Awards.
Working with Other Artists
Throughout his career, Nickatina has worked with many other artists. He made several albums with a rapper named Equipto.
In 2008, he released A Tale of Two Andres with Mac Dre. Nickatina and Mac Dre were close friends. Even though they only recorded three songs together, the album was a special tribute to Mac Dre's memory after he passed away.
Recent Years
Nickatina's self-titled album, released in 2013, became his most successful one. It appeared on several Billboard charts, including the main iTunes album chart.
In 2020, he launched his own line of sneakers called "Killer Whales." He also appeared on the song "Fog Mode" by another San Francisco rapper, Dregs One.
