Andrea Bargnani's Basketball Journey
Starting Out in Italy
Andrea Bargnani began his basketball journey in 2002. He played for Stella Azzurra Roma in Italy's fourth-level league. In his first season, he scored about 13 points and grabbed 4.5 rebounds per game.
In 2003, Bargnani joined Benetton Treviso, a team in Italy's top league. He also played in the EuroLeague, a major European competition. He even played against the Toronto Raptors in a pre-season game in 2003. He scored 13 points in that game.
During the 2005–06 season, he played a big role for Benetton Treviso. He averaged 12 points and 5.6 rebounds per game. He also led the Italian league in blocked shots. That season, he helped Benetton win the Italian League championship. He was also named the EuroLeague Rising Star. This award goes to the best young player (22 or under) in the EuroLeague.
NBA Years with the Toronto Raptors
Many people compared Bargnani to famous German NBA player Dirk Nowitzki. This was because he was tall but could shoot from far away. He was also good at moving and handling the ball. In 2006, the Toronto Raptors picked him first in the NBA draft. He was the first European player ever to be picked first overall.
Rookie Season (2006–07)
Bargnani played his first NBA game on November 1, 2006. He was the fourth Italian-born player to play in the NBA. It took him some time to get used to the league. But he slowly got better and played more. Fans in Toronto started to like him.
He was named the Eastern Conference Rookie of the Month twice. He also played in the T-Mobile Rookie Challenge game. This game features the best young players in the NBA. Bargnani finished second in the voting for NBA Rookie of the Year. He helped the Raptors win their first division title. They also made the NBA playoffs for the first time in five years.
Second Season (2007–08)
Before his second season, many thought Bargnani would have a great year. However, he struggled a bit. His stats went down, and he didn't grab as many rebounds. He also got into foul trouble often. Some people even thought he should be traded.
Improving His Game (2008–09)
The Raptors worked with Bargnani to help him improve. He focused on driving to the basket more instead of just shooting. He also gained more muscle. These changes helped him become a better player. He started playing as a small forward.
He scored a career-high 29 points in November 2008. In January, he played very well, averaging over 21 points per game. He even scored a career-high 31 points in one game. He signed a new contract with the Raptors in 2009. This contract was for five seasons.
Strong Performance (2009–10)
Bargnani continued to play well in the 2009–10 season. He had many games where he scored a lot of points and grabbed many rebounds. He scored a career-high 34 points in a game against the Indiana Pacers. He also scored 33 points against the Detroit Pistons. He set new career highs in points, rebounds, blocks, and minutes played.
Becoming a Team Leader (2010–11)
After Chris Bosh left the Raptors, Bargnani became the main player on offense. On December 8, 2010, he scored a career-high 41 points against the New York Knicks. He had his best year, averaging 21 points, 5 rebounds, and 1 block per game.
Final Seasons with Toronto (2011–13)
During the 2011 NBA lockout, Bargnani worked on his game. He wanted to become more of a power forward. In March 2012, he scored 26 points in a game. He became the fourth player to score 6,000 points for the Raptors. He missed many games in the 2012–13 season because of an elbow injury.
Moving to the New York Knicks (2013–2015)
In July 2013, Bargnani was traded to the New York Knicks. He played for them for two seasons. In December 2013, he made a strange play in a game against the Milwaukee Bucks. The Knicks were winning by two points with seconds left. Instead of holding the ball, he shot a three-pointer and missed. The game went into double-overtime, but the Knicks still won.
In January 2014, he hurt his left elbow and missed the rest of the season. He also missed many games in the 2014–15 season due to a hamstring and calf injury.
Time with the Brooklyn Nets (2015–2016)
In July 2015, Bargnani signed with the Brooklyn Nets. He played his first game for them in October, scoring 17 points. In December, he scored a season-high 23 points against the Philadelphia 76ers. He was waived by the Nets in February 2016.
Return to Europe with Baskonia (2016–2017)
In July 2016, Bargnani went back to Europe. He signed a two-year deal with Baskonia, a Spanish team. In his first EuroLeague game that season, he scored 26 points. However, he had many injuries again. Baskonia and Bargnani decided to part ways in April 2017. He averaged 8.8 points per game in the EuroLeague.
Playing for Italy
Andrea Bargnani played for Italy's junior and under-20 national teams. He also played for the senior Italian national team in EuroBasket 2007. Italy finished ninth in that competition. He averaged 12.7 points and 5.0 rebounds per game.
He also played for Italy in EuroBasket 2015. He averaged 14.8 points and 3.6 rebounds per game. Italy finished in sixth place in that tournament.
