Andrea Bargnani started his basketball journey in 2002. He played for Stella Azzurra Roma in Italy's fourth-level league. In his first season, he scored about 13 points and grabbed 4.5 rebounds per game.
In 2003, he moved to Benetton Treviso, a top team in Italy. He slowly improved his game. In the 2005–06 season, he averaged 12 points and 5.6 rebounds. Playing in the NBA (2006–2016)
Joining the Toronto Raptors (2006–2013)
Many people compared Andrea Bargnani to famous German NBA player Dirk Nowitzki. This was because Andrea could shoot well from far away. He was also very mobile for his size. In 2006, the Toronto Raptors picked him as the first player in the 2006 NBA draft. This was a big deal because he was the first European player ever to be picked first.
Andrea played his first NBA game on November 1, 2006. He was the fourth Italian-born player to play in the NBA. He worked hard to get better. Fans in Toronto started to like him. He was named the NBA's Eastern Conference Rookie of the Month twice. He also played in the Rookie Challenge game during the NBA All-Star weekend.
In March 2007, Andrea had surgery for appendicitis. He recovered and finished the season strong. He averaged 11.6 points and 3.9 rebounds per game. His play helped the Raptors win their first division title. They also made it to the NBA playoffs for the first time in five years. Andrea finished second for the NBA Rookie of the Year award.
The next season (2007–08) was tougher for Andrea. He faced criticism for not playing as well. However, the Raptors believed in him. They worked with him to improve his game. He started to drive to the basket more and became a better shot-blocker.
In the 2008–09 season, Andrea improved a lot. He scored a career-high 29 points in one game. He also grabbed 10 rebounds. He became a key player for the Raptors. He signed a new contract with the team in 2009.
Andrea continued to play well in the 2009–10 season. He scored a new career-high of 34 points in a game. He averaged career highs in points, rebounds, and blocks.
For the 2010–11 season, Andrea became the main player for the Raptors. He scored a career-high 41 points in a game against the New York Knicks. He had a great year, averaging 21 points per game.
In the 2011–12 season, Andrea focused on becoming a better power forward. He reached a milestone on March 28, 2012. He became the fourth player to score 6,000 points as a Raptor.
The 2012–13 season was difficult due to an elbow injury. He missed many games because of it.
Moving to the New York Knicks (2013–2015)
In July 2013, Andrea Bargnani was traded to the New York Knicks. He played for them for two seasons. In December 2013, he made a memorable play against the Milwaukee Bucks. With his team up by two points in overtime, he got a rebound. Instead of holding the ball, he shot a three-pointer that missed. The game went into double-overtime, but the Knicks still won.
In January 2014, Andrea injured his left elbow again. This injury kept him out for the rest of the season. The Knicks did not make the playoffs that year.
He also faced injuries in the 2014–15 season. He missed many games with a hamstring and calf injury. He returned to play in December 2014.
Playing for the Brooklyn Nets (2015–2016)
Andrea signed with the Brooklyn Nets in July 2015. He played his first game for them in October. He scored 17 points and grabbed 7 rebounds. In December, he scored a season-high 23 points against the Philadelphia 76ers. The Nets released him in February 2016.
Returning to Europe (2016–2017)
In July 2016, Andrea Bargnani went back to Europe. He signed a two-year deal with the Spanish club Baskonia. In his first EuroLeague game, he scored 26 points. However, he continued to struggle with injuries. Baskonia and Andrea parted ways in April 2017. He averaged 8.8 points in EuroLeague games.
Playing for Italy's National Team
