Andrea Buchanan (born April 6, 1955 – died January 28, 1982) was an American professional tennis player. She was known for her skills on the court.
Andrea Buchanan's Life and Tennis Career
Andrea Buchanan was born in Los Angeles, California. She attended Dorsey High School. Andrea became a professional tennis player in 1978.
She was one of the few African American players on the professional tennis tour during her time. Andrea worked hard and competed in many big tournaments.
Grand Slam Highlights
Andrea had some of her best results at the major tennis tournaments called Grand Slams. These include the French Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open.
At the 1981 Wimbledon Championships, she played very well. She won a match against Barbara Hallquist. Later, she played against the second-ranked player, Hana Mandlíková, in the third round.
Her last Grand Slam appearance was at the 1981 US Open. There, she won her first-round match against Eva Pfaff.
A Sad Event
On January 28, 1982, Andrea Buchanan was found seriously injured. This happened at a fish market in Los Angeles where she worked part-time. She was taken to the hospital but sadly passed away. Her boss, Nathanial Brown, also died at the scene.
The police investigated the incident. However, the reason for what happened is still unknown. The case remains unsolved.
Andrea was a very popular player among her fellow tennis pros. Many people were very sad about her death. Billie Jean King, a famous tennis player and close friend of Andrea, was deeply affected. She had to stop playing during a match because she was too upset to continue.
