Andrea Pohoreckyj Danyluk (born March 1, 1963 – died March 3, 2022) was an American computer scientist. She was also a dedicated teacher. She taught computer science at Williams College. She also helped lead a group that encourages more people to get involved in computer research.

Her School Days

Andrea Danyluk loved learning. She studied mathematics and computer science at Vassar College. She earned her first degree there in 1984. Later, she went to Columbia University. She completed her Ph.D. in computer science in 1989. Her special research project was about machine learning. This is a field where computers learn from data.

Her Career in Computers

After working in the computer industry, Danyluk joined Williams College in 1993. She became a professor there. She led the computer science department from 2005 to 2008. She also led the cognitive science program for a year. From 2009 to 2010, she was the acting dean of the faculty. This is a very important leadership role.

She became a special professor at Williams College in 2012. In 2018, she received another important professorship.

Danyluk also worked at Northeastern University. She helped start a master's program there. This program was for students who studied other subjects as undergraduates. It helped them learn computer science. She also advised a group at Northeastern that helps make computing more open to everyone.

Andrea Danyluk believed in teaching event-driven programming. This is a way of writing computer programs. It focuses on how programs react to things happening, like a mouse click. She even wrote a textbook about it. The book is called Java: An Eventful Approach. She wrote it with Kim Bruce and Thomas Murtagh.

Her Passing

Andrea Danyluk lived in Williamstown, Massachusetts. She passed away on March 3, 2022. This was just two days after her 59th birthday. She was survived by her husband, Andrew Danyluk, their two children, and her two siblings.

Special Recognition

The Computing Research Association honored Andrea Danyluk. They gave her the 2022 A. Nico Habermann Award. This award was given to her after her passing. It recognized her important contributions to computer science.
