Andrea Heinemann Simon (born Andrea Heinemann; March 24, 1909 – February 15, 1994) was an American activist who worked for civil rights. She was also the mother of the famous singer Carly Simon.
Early Life and Family
Andrea Louise Heinemann was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on March 24, 1909. She grew up there as the second child of Frederick Adolph "Fred" Heinemann and Ofelia "Elma Marie" (Oliete/Ollright). Her father had German roots. Her mother was born in Cuba and had African and Indigenous heritage.
On August 3, 1934, Andrea married Richard L. Simon. He was a co-founder of a well-known book publishing company called Simon & Schuster. Before they got engaged, Andrea worked as a receptionist at his company.
Andrea and Richard had four children:
- Joanna Simon, who was an opera singer and later a real estate agent.
- Lucy Simon, who wrote music for Broadway shows.
- Carly Simon, a very famous singer and songwriter.
- Peter Simon.
The family lived in a neighborhood called Riverdale in The Bronx, New York.
Community Work and Activism
Andrea Simon was very active in her community. She was also deeply involved in the civil rights movement. This movement worked to gain equal rights for all people, especially African Americans.
She served on the board of directors for the Riverdale Mental Health Association for more than 30 years. This group helps people with mental health needs. She also worked with the Riverdale Chapter of the United Nations Association. This organization supports the goals of the United Nations.
Later Life and Legacy
Andrea Heinemann Simon passed away on February 15, 1994. She was 84 years old and died from lung cancer at her home in Riverdale. She is remembered for her dedication to civil rights and her community work.
