Growing Up in Venice
Andrea Navagero was born into an important family in Venice. In 1504, he became a member of the Maggior Consiglio. This was a major government group in Venice. Andrea studied classic books and languages in Venice and Padua. These studies helped him become a very educated person.
Working with Books
In Venice, Andrea worked with a famous publishing company. It was called Aldina or Aldine Press. This company was started by Aldus Manutius. After 1515, Andrea Torresano ran the company for many years. Navagero helped the Aldine Press publish important old books. These included works by famous writers like Cicero, Ovid, Virgil, Quintilian, and Lucretius.
Important Writings
Andrea Navagero was often asked to write special poems. These poems were called elegies. They were written to honor famous people who had passed away. Some of the people he wrote about included Caterina Cornaro and Doge Leonardo Loredan. A Doge was the leader of Venice.
Andrea Navagero was buried in a place called San Martino in Murano.
