Andreas Anagnostakis (born August 11, 1826 – died March 27, 1897) was a very important Greek doctor. He specialized in eyes, which is called ophthalmology. He was also a teacher and a writer.

He is most famous for inventing a special handheld tool called the ophthalmoscope. Doctors still use it today to look inside your eyes! Many people consider him the first eye doctor in Greece.

About Andreas Anagnostakis

His Early Life

Andreas Anagnostakis was born on August 11, 1826. He was born on a Greek island called Antikythera. His parents were from a village in Crete. They had to leave their home and moved to Syra. This is where Andreas went to school.

Later, he went to the Medical School at the University of Athens. He continued his studies in other big cities like Vienna, Berlin, and Paris. Queen Amalia helped pay for his studies. He earned his medical degree in 1849. At first, he was a general doctor. But then he decided to focus on eye care.

His Amazing Career

While studying in France, Andreas Anagnostakis had a brilliant idea. He wanted to improve a tool called the ophthalmoscope. This tool helps doctors see inside the eye. Other inventors had worked on it, but Andreas wanted to make it better.

He thought about old Greek writings for inspiration. These writings talked about how light reflects. He then worked on his idea in London. He made the ophthalmoscope smaller and added a special curved mirror. This mirror had a small hole in the middle. He also suggested adding a lens to make the image clearer.

Andreas Anagnostakis used his new ophthalmoscope in his work. He showed it at the first-ever eye doctor conference in Brussels in 1857. Years later, in 1915, other inventors added lights to his design. This made it even closer to the ophthalmoscopes doctors use today.

After inventing his tool, he went back to Greece. He became the director of a new eye hospital called Ophthalmiatreion. He worked there for 41 years until he passed away. He also became a professor at the University of Athens. He taught about eyes and ears. He is known as the first eye care professor in Greece.

Andreas Anagnostakis worked with doctors from all over the world. He learned new ways to do cataract surgery. He also helped develop treatments for eye conditions. One method for an eyelid condition is even named after him.

Besides his medical work, Andreas Anagnostakis loved old Greek literature. He even translated a play called Maria Stuart. He was also involved in medical journals and wrote many books. One of his books was a 7-volume history of eye care. He also wrote about medicine in ancient Greek plays. He even explored how ancient doctors thought about keeping things clean during surgery.

Andreas Anagnostakis passed away in Athens on March 27, 1897.

In 1994, a special award was created in his honor. It is given to eye doctors who do important research. There is also a statue of him in Greece.
