Andreas Georgiou (Greek: Ανδρέας Γεωργίου, born in Patras, 1960) is a Greek economist. He used to be the President of the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT), which is Greece's main office for collecting and sharing statistics.
In June 2021, he was chosen to represent the European Parliament on an important board. This board, called the European Statistical Governance Advisory Board, checks how well European statistics are managed. Mr. Georgiou also teaches about statistics and economics at Amherst College. He is a member of important groups like the International Statistical Institute.

Andreas Georgiou's Life and Work
Early Life and Education
Andreas Georgiou finished high school at Athens College. He then went to Amherst College in the United States. There, he earned degrees in Economics and Political Science.
Later, he received a Ph.D. (a very advanced university degree) in Economics. He got this from the University of Michigan. His studies focused on how money works in a country and how to keep an economy stable.
Working at the IMF
From 1989 to 2010, Mr. Georgiou worked for the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The IMF is an organization that helps countries with their money and economies. He led teams that helped countries create and manage their economic plans.
From 2004 to 2010, he worked in the IMF's statistics department. He helped create new ways to measure the health of financial systems. He also taught economics at the University of Michigan and in Slovakia. He gave many workshops on statistics to government officials from over 120 countries.
Leading Greek Statistics
On August 2, 2010, Andreas Georgiou became the President of the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT). This office is in charge of collecting and publishing official statistics for Greece. He resigned from this role on August 2, 2015.
In June 2021, the European Parliament chose Mr. Georgiou for a position on the European Statistical Governance Advisory Board. This board helps make sure that statistics across Europe are reliable and independent.
Challenges and Recognition
Mr. Georgiou faced some challenges during his time leading ELSTAT. He was recognized by several international statistical groups in 2018. They gave him a special award for upholding high professional standards. This award was for his work in keeping statistical systems honest and accurate.
Many economists and statisticians around the world have supported Mr. Georgiou. They believe he worked hard to provide accurate statistics for Greece.
