Andreas Georgiou (Greek: Ανδρέας Γεωργίου, born in Patras, 1960) is a Greek economist. An economist is someone who studies how people and countries use their resources. He used to be the President of the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT). This is Greece's official group that collects and shares important numbers about the country.
In June 2021, he was chosen by the European Parliament to join the European Statistical Governance Advisory Board. This group checks how well statistics are collected across Europe. Mr. Georgiou also teaches about statistics and economics at Amherst College. He is a member of important international groups for statisticians, like the Council of the International Statistical Institute.

About Andreas Georgiou
Early Life and Education
Andreas Georgiou finished high school in Athens College. He then went to Amherst College where he earned a high-level degree in Economics and Political Science. He continued his studies at the University of Michigan. There, he earned his Ph.D. in Economics. His studies focused on how money works in a country and how to keep the economy stable. He also studied international trade and finance.
Working at the IMF
From 1989 to July 2010, Mr. Georgiou worked for the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The IMF is an organization that helps countries around the world with their money problems. He led teams that helped countries create and manage their economic plans.
From 2004 to 2010, he was a deputy chief in the IMF's Statistics Department. In this role, he helped develop new ways to measure the health of financial systems. He also taught economics at the University of Michigan and other universities. He gave many seminars on statistical methods to officials from over 120 countries.
Leading ELSTAT
On August 2, 2010, Andreas Georgiou became the President of the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT). He worked there for five years. On August 2, 2015, he left his position.
In June 2021, the European Parliament nearly all voted for Mr. Georgiou to join the European Statistical Governance Advisory Board (ESGAB). This shows the trust in his expertise.
Recognition for His Work
During his time at ELSTAT, Mr. Georgiou faced some challenges regarding how Greece's economic numbers were reported. However, many international experts and organizations supported his work.
In September 2018, six major international statistical organizations gave Mr. Georgiou a special award. This award recognized him for "upholding the highest professional standards in his public service." It showed that he worked with great honesty and care in his role. Many economists and statisticians around the world believe he was a strong defender of accurate statistics.
