Andreas Staier studied music at schools in Hanover and Amsterdam. He learned to play the piano and the harpsichord. His teachers helped him become a skilled musician.

From 1983 to 1986, Andreas was the main harpsichord player for a music group called Musica Antiqua Köln. He traveled a lot with them, performing in many places. While with the group, he also kept learning about playing older music on the fortepiano.

In 1986, he decided to start his own solo career. He became a touring fortepiano soloist, playing by himself. He also played with singers, helping them with their songs, and was a piano soloist for another group called Les Adieux. From 1987 to 1996, he taught harpsichord at a music school in Basel.
