When he was younger, Dumont moved to Mexico. There, he received his education. He even became an officer in the army under Emperor Maximilian I of Mexico. After the emperor's rule ended, Dumont started his own business. However, he soon decided he wanted to return to Louisiana.
Return to Louisiana and Public Service
Dumont came back to Louisiana in 1866. He settled in New Orleans and quickly became involved in politics.
During the Reconstruction era, Dumont held several important jobs. He worked as a police sergeant, a deputy U.S. marshal, and a customs officer. He also served as a recorder in Algiers, a part of New Orleans.

In July 1880, Dumont was appointed as the Naval Officer for New Orleans. This job involved working with ships and trade. He was very good at this role because he could speak several different languages. This helped him communicate with sailors from many countries.
Dumont was also a respected figure in his community. In the 1880s, a baseball team in Algiers was named the A. J. Dumont Base Ball Club in his honor.
In 1881, Dumont was one of twelve people chosen to travel to Washington, D.C. Their mission was to present the views of Louisiana Republicans to President James A. Garfield.
