Andrew Tym Hattersley is a very important scientist. He was born in London in 1958. He is a professor at the University of Exeter. He is famous for his work on a special type of diabetes. This type is called monogenic diabetes.

Professor Hattersley was chosen as a Fellow of the Royal Society in 2010. This is a huge honor for scientists. He also works as a Senior Investigator for the National Institute for Health and Care Research.

Becoming a Scientist

Andrew Hattersley studied at some of the best universities. He earned his first degree from Emmanuel College, Cambridge in 1981. He then went to the University of Oxford. There, he became a doctor in 1984. He later earned another advanced degree from Oxford in 1997.

He also trained at Hammersmith Hospital. This training helped him learn even more about diabetes.

His Work and Discoveries

Professor Hattersley started teaching at the University of Birmingham in 1993. In 1995, he moved to the University of Exeter. He made a very important discovery there. He found that a gene called glucokinase can cause diabetes. This was the first time a specific gene was linked to diabetes.

He has written over 500 papers about diabetes. His work has helped us understand MODY much better. MODY stands for Maturity-Onset Diabetes of the Young. It is a type of monogenic diabetes. His research has also led to better treatments for people with this condition.

Awards and Special Honors

Professor Hattersley has received many awards for his important work. These awards show how much his research has helped people.

  • 1998: He became a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in London.
  • 2004: He was made a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences.
  • 2010: He became a Fellow of the Royal Society.
  • 2014: He won the Naomi Berrie Award. This award is for excellent research in diabetes.
  • 2015: He received the Rolf Luft Award.
  • 2016: He was given the GlaxoSmithKline Prize.
  • 2016: He also won the EASD–Novo Nordisk Foundation Diabetes Prize for Excellence.
  • 2021: He received the Harold Hamm International Prize. This prize is for biomedical research in diabetes.

In 2017, Professor Hattersley received a special honor from the Queen. He was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE). This was for his great contributions to medical science.
