Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Andrew Tym Hattersley is a very important scientist from London, born in 1958. He is a professor at the University of Exeter and is famous for his groundbreaking research on a special type of diabetes called monogenic diabetes. This kind of diabetes is caused by a change in just one gene. In 2010, he was chosen as a Fellow of the Royal Society, which is a big honor for scientists. He also works as a Senior Investigator at the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR). He received a special award called CBE for his services to medical science.

His Journey in Medicine

Andrew Hattersley studied at Emmanuel College, Cambridge, where he earned his first degree in 1981. He then went to Oxford University and completed his medical degrees in 1984 and 1997. After his studies, he continued his training in diabetes care at Hammersmith Hospital.

He started teaching at the University of Birmingham in 1993. Since 1995, he has been working at the University of Exeter. One of his most important discoveries was finding a gene called glucokinase. This was the very first gene identified that directly causes diabetes. He has written over 500 scientific papers about diabetes. His work has greatly improved our understanding of MODY (Maturity-Onset Diabetes of the Young), which is a type of diabetes that often runs in families. Thanks to his research, doctors now have better ways to treat and support people with this condition.
