Andrew Heath (February 20, 1832 – February 19, 1887) was an important Baptist minister. He lived and worked in Louisville, Kentucky. He is remembered for his leadership and for helping many people in his community.
Early Life and Freedom
Andrew Heath was born on February 20, 1832, in Henderson County, Kentucky. When he was born, he was enslaved. Around 1844, he moved with his owner to Louisville, Kentucky.
Later, he was sold to Samuel L. Nock, a merchant in Louisville. Andrew Heath stayed with Mr. Nock until 1863. That year, the Emancipation Proclamation was issued, which meant he became a free man.
After gaining his freedom, Heath worked in the furniture business for a while. In 1851, he married Lucy Hamilton. They had children together.
Becoming a Minister
In 1863, Andrew Heath became a member of the Baptist church. He felt a calling to serve his community. In 1867, he was officially made a minister.
A group of church leaders, including Henry Adams and William Troy, helped ordain him. This was a big step in his life.
Leading the Fifth Street Baptist Church
In 1868, Andrew Heath became the assistant pastor at the Fifth Street Baptist Church. He worked alongside Henry Adams, who was the main pastor.
When Henry Adams passed away in 1872, Andrew Heath took over as the lead pastor. He was a very respected leader in the church. People said he baptized over 1,500 individuals during his time there.
Heath also served as a chairman and a member of the executive board. This was for the General Association of Colored Baptists. This group helped organize and support Baptist churches.
Andrew Heath passed away on February 19, 1887, after being ill for some time. His assistant pastor, John H. Frank, took over his role at the Fifth Street Baptist Church.
