Andrew Heiskell (born September 13, 1915, in Naples, Italy – died July 6, 2003, in Darien, Connecticut) was a very important leader in the world of magazines. He was the chairman and CEO of Time Inc. from 1960 to 1980. He was also known for his generous giving, called philanthropy, to many organizations. One of these was the New York Public Library. He even served as the President of the Inter American Press Association from 1961 to 1962.

About Andrew Heiskell
His Early Life and Career
Andrew Heiskell was born in Naples, Italy. His parents, Ann Moore Hubbard and Morgan Ott Heiskell, were Americans. They had moved to Capri, Italy, before he was born. Andrew spent his childhood living in other countries.
In 1946, when he was just 30 years old, he became the publisher of Life magazine. Years later, as the CEO of Time Inc., he had to make the difficult decision to close Life magazine in 1972.
Creating People Magazine
In 1974, Andrew Heiskell helped create a new magazine called People. This magazine quickly became very successful and a valuable part of Time Inc.
Supporting Education and Arts
Andrew Heiskell believed in helping others. The Institute of International Education has an award named after him, called the Andrew Heiskell Award. This award recognizes people who promote international education. Heiskell also gave money to help pay for the Arts Director position at the American Academy in Rome. This helped support artists and their work.
His Family Life
Andrew Heiskell was married three times. His first wife was Cornelia Scott. They had two children together, named Diane and Peter. His second wife was the famous Hollywood actress Madeleine Carroll. They had one daughter, Anne Madeleine. In 1965, he married his third wife, Marian Sulzberger Dryfoos. She was the widow of a publisher from The New York Times.
