Andrew followed in his father's footsteps. He joined the family business, Francis Orr & Sons, which became a successful wholesale stationer. This means they sold large amounts of paper, pens, and other office supplies to other businesses.

A Leader in Glasgow

Sir Andrew Orr was not just a businessman; he was also very active in his community. In 1842, he became a town councillor in Glasgow. This role meant he helped make decisions for the city.

What is a Lord Provost?

In 1854, Andrew Orr was elected Lord Provost of Glasgow. The Lord Provost is like the mayor of a city in Scotland. It's a very important job, as they represent the city and lead its council. During his time as Lord Provost, Sir Andrew lived at 5 Blythswood Square in Glasgow.
