Andrew Meredith Paulson (born November 13, 1958 – died July 18, 2017) was an American businessman. He was born in Champaign, Illinois. His father was the well-known American professor Ronald Paulson.

In his younger years, Andrew worked with scientists. He helped with research at places like Johns Hopkins Hospital and Yale University. He also worked at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute. While in college, he managed a classical music radio show. He also started a theater company where he put on many plays.

Andrew Paulson graduated from Yale University in 1981. He earned a degree in French Literature. He also studied at the Yale School of Drama. From 1982 to 1986, he lived in Berlin and Paris. During this time, he wrote novels. Later, from 1987 to 1993, he lived in Paris, London, and Milan. He worked as a fashion and advertising photographer. He also helped start an art gallery called Urbi et Orbi. And he co-founded a design studio called Pourriture Noble.

Andrew Paulson's Influence on Plays

In 1991, a famous play called La Bête opened. It was shown on Broadway in New York and in London. The main character, Valère, was largely based on Andrew Paulson when he was younger. This play is a comedy inspired by the writer Molière. It is set in France in the 1600s. Valère's long speech in the play is very famous. It has become a popular part of modern American theater. The play was performed again in 2010.

In 2013, another play was created about Andrew Paulson. It was called Virtual, or the Life and Adventures of Andrew Paulson, Entrepreneur. This play was shown in Moscow, Russia.

Starting Businesses in Russia

Andrew Paulson was first invited to Russia in 1993. He went there to take photos. Soon after, he started working on publishing projects in Moscow. He helped create several magazines. These included Delovie Lyudi and Ponedyelnik. He also worked on Vechernyaya Moskva, which listed entertainment events.

After a financial crisis in Russia in 1998, Paulson started a new company. With his partners, he founded Afisha. This was a magazine about entertainment and events. It became very important for culture in Moscow and St. Petersburg. Later, they launched other magazines. These included Bolshoi Gorod in 2002 and MIR in 2003.

In October 2013, Andrew Paulson was chosen as the president of the English Chess Federation. However, he resigned from this role six months later.

Advisory Roles and Legacy

Andrew Paulson also served on the advisory boards of several important groups. These included charities, foundations, and technology companies. He helped guide organizations like The Human Dignity Trust.

Andrew Paulson passed away on July 18, 2017, in London. He died from lung cancer.
