Andrew Plimer (born 1763, died 1837) was a talented British artist. He was especially known for painting tiny portraits called miniatures. His brother, Nathaniel Plimer, was also a miniature painter.

Early Life and Training

Andrew Plimer was born in Wellington, Shropshire, England. He was baptized on December 29, 1763. His father, Nathaniel Plimer, was a clockmaker. Andrew and his older brother Nathaniel first trained to be clockmakers, just like their father.

However, the brothers decided to try something different. They left home and traveled for more than two years. They explored Wales and the west of England with a group of performers. Around 1781, they settled in London. Andrew found work as a manservant for a famous artist named Richard Cosway. Cosway later taught Andrew how to paint portraits.

Becoming a Miniature Artist

Andrew Plimer became very skilled at painting portrait miniatures. These are small, detailed portraits often worn as jewelry or kept in special cases. His beautiful artwork was shown at the Royal Academy in London many times. He exhibited his paintings between 1768 and 1810, and again in 1819.

One of his most famous paintings shows the three daughters of Sir John Rushout. His brother, Nathaniel Plimer, also learned from Richard Cosway and became a successful miniature painter.

Family Life

Andrew Plimer married Joanna Louisa Knight on February 21, 1801. Joanna was the daughter of John and Frances Knight from Wicken, Northamptonshire. Andrew and Joanna had one son, who sadly died when he was very young. They also had four daughters.

Joanna's younger sister, Mary Ann Knight, also became a miniaturist. She was a student and a good friend of Andrew Plimer.

Later Years

Andrew Plimer passed away in January 1837 in Brighton, Sussex. He was 73 years old. He was buried on February 4 at Old Hove.
