Andrée Island is a small piece of land located in a place called Recess Cove. This cove is part of Charlotte Bay, which is off the northern coast of the Eurydice Peninsula in Antarctica. It's found along the Danco Coast on the Antarctic Peninsula.
Discovering Andrée Island
This island was first mapped by a group called the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey. They used special air photos taken by Hunting Aerosurveys Ltd between 1956 and 1957.
How the Island Got Its Name
The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee officially named the island in 1960. They chose to name it after Salomon August Andrée. He was a Swedish engineer born in 1854.
Andrée was famous for trying to fly over the North Pole in a balloon back in 1897. Sadly, he and his team did not survive this brave attempt.
Scientific Research
Scientists have visited Andrée Island to study its environment. In 1981, a researcher named R. I. L. Smith carried out a study there. This research focused on the island's soil and the types of plants growing on it.
