Andrés Aldama won his gold medal at the 1980 Summer Olympics. He defeated John Mugabi from Uganda in the final match. Four years earlier, at the 1976 Summer Olympics, he won a silver medal. He lost to the famous boxer Sugar Ray Leonard from the United States in the final. In 1979, he also won a gold medal at the Pan American Games.
