About the 1976 Montreal Olympics
The Summer Olympics are a huge international sports festival. Athletes from all over the world come together to compete. Montreal was chosen to host the 1976 Games in May 1970. They won over other cities like Moscow and Los Angeles. Moscow later hosted the 1980 Games, and Los Angeles hosted in 1984.
Choosing the Host City
Picking an Olympic host city is a big decision. Cities bid to show why they would be the best place. Montreal worked hard to prove it could host such a large event. Winning the bid meant years of planning and building.
The Olympic Stadium and Village

The Games officially started on July 17, 1976. Queen Elizabeth II opened the Games. The Olympic Torch was lit by two young athletes, Stéphane Préfontaine and Sandra Henderson. The Games ended on August 1, 1976, with a closing ceremony.

A total of 92 nations sent their athletes to Montreal. About 6,028 athletes competed in the Games. This included 4,781 men and 1,247 women. They competed in 198 events across 21 different sports.
