Sarajevo was chosen over other cities like Sapporo, Japan, and Falun in Sweden. This was a special event because it was the first time the Winter Olympics were held in Eastern Europe. The only other Olympic Games held in Eastern Europe before this were the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow.
