The 2014 Winter Olympics, also known as the XXII Olympic Winter Games or Sochi 2014, was a big international sports event. It took place in Sochi, Russia, from February 7 to February 23, 2014. Some events even started a day earlier, on February 6.

These Games were the first Olympics led by Thomas Bach, who was the new head of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The special group that organized the Games was called the Sochi Organizing Committee. Sochi was chosen to host the Games in July 2007. This was the first time the Olympics were held in a country that used to be part of the Soviet Union since it broke up in 1991. The Soviet Union had hosted the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow.

A record 98 events were held across 15 different winter sports. Many new competitions were added, making it the biggest Winter Olympics at that time. New events included mixed relay in biathlon, women's ski jumping, and mixed-team figure skating. There were also new events like half-pipe skiing and snowboard slopestyle. The events happened in two main areas: the Olympic Park near the Black Sea coast and the snowy mountains of Krasnaya Polyana.

The 2014 Winter Olympics were the most expensive Games ever. They cost about US$51 billion. This was much more than the original plan and more than the cost of the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. Billions of people around the world watched the Games on TV.

Sochi is known for its warm weather, even in winter. The average temperature in February is about 8.3 degrees Celsius (47 degrees Fahrenheit). This makes it the warmest city to ever host the Winter Olympics. All venues and public areas were smoke-free during the Games. It was also the first time a special Olympic Park was built for the Winter Games.

The park also had a beautiful fountain show called "The Waters of the Olympic Park." This fountain was a backdrop for medal ceremonies and the opening and closing events.

Some of the main venues in the Coastal Cluster included:

The medals for the Sochi Games were special. They had a design that looked like Sochi's landscape, with clear parts shaped like diamonds. These diamonds represented mountains and had patterns from different regions of Russia.

A unique touch was added to the gold medals given out on February 15. These medals included small pieces of the Chelyabinsk meteor. This was to mark one year since parts of this space rock fell into a lake in Russia's Ural Mountains.
