1972 Summer Olympics facts for kids
The 1972 Summer Olympics, officially called the Games of the XX Olympiad, were a big international sports event. They happened in Munich, in what was then West Germany, from August 26 to September 11, 1972. Munich was chosen to host the Olympics in April 1966. It won over other cities like Detroit, USA; Madrid, Spain; and Montreal, Canada.

About the 1972 Munich Olympics
The 1972 Summer Olympics were a major global event where athletes from many countries competed. The city of Munich worked hard to create a welcoming and modern atmosphere for the games. They built new sports venues and an Olympic Village for the athletes to stay in.
A Sad Event at the Games
Sadly, the 1972 Summer Olympics are also remembered for a very serious and sad event. A group of Palestinian terrorists attacked the Olympic Village. They kidnapped and killed several Israeli athletes. This tragic event is known as the Munich massacre. It was a very difficult time during the games, and it brought a lot of sadness to the world. A movie called Munich was later made about how Israel responded to this event.
