1968 Summer Olympics facts for kids
The 1968 Summer Olympics, also known as the Games of the XIX Olympiad, were a big international sports event held in Mexico City, Mexico in 1968. Mexico City was chosen to host the Games in 1963, beating out other cities like Detroit, Buenos Aires, and Lyon.
Just ten days before the Games began, a sad event happened in Mexico City. There were protests, and a difficult clash with security forces took place, where many people were hurt or lost their lives. This event is known as the Tlatelolco massacre.
The 1968 Games were special because they were the only time the Olympics have ever been held in Latin America. They were also only the second time the Games were held outside of Western Europe, Australia, or the USA.
