Angel Nafis (born December 1988) is an American poet and spoken-word artist. She writes and performs her own poems. She is famous for her book BlackGirl Mansion, which came out in 2012. Angel Nafis lives in Brooklyn, New York.

Early Life

Angel Nafis grew up in Ann Arbor, Michigan. She went to Huron High School there. She finished high school in 2006. She was part of the Ann Arbor Youth Poetry Slam Team in 2005 and 2006. This is where young poets perform their work.

Angel was raised Muslim. Her mother passed away when she was young. So, her father raised her. Her father's family came from New York and Georgia. Her mother's family was from Chicago and Mississippi.

Education

Angel Nafis studied at Hunter College and earned her bachelor's degree there. She is also working on a master's degree in poetry at Warren Wilson College.

Angel Nafis is a special member of the Cave Canem Foundation. This group supports African American poets. She also had a residency at the Millay Colony for the Arts, which is a place for artists to work. She started and runs the Poetry Salon at Greenlight Bookstore. Here, she organizes poetry readings and writing workshops.

She also works with another poet named Morgan Parker. They have a poetry group called The Other Black Girl Collective. This duo performs their poems together and travels around the world.

Her poems have been featured in many places. These include the BreakBeat Poets Anthology, Buzzfeed Reader, and Poetry magazine. Her work has also appeared in the Rumpus and Found Magazine's Requiem for a Paper Bag.

Personal Life

Angel Nafis lives in Brooklyn. She shares her home with Shira Erlichman, who is an artist, writer, and musician. They have also toured together, performing their work on the "Odes for You" tour.

Awards and Honors

Angel Nafis has received several important awards for her poetry.

  • She won the Ruth Lilly and Dorothy Sargent Rosenberg Poetry Fellowship in 2016. This award came from the Poetry Foundation.
