Her Early Life and School
Angela Tomasa Bofill was born on May 2, 1954. She was born in Brooklyn, New York City. Her father was Cuban and her mother was Puerto Rican. Angela grew up in The Bronx. She listened to a lot of Latin music. She also found inspiration from African-American singers.
When Angela was a child, she spent weekends studying classical music. She sang in New York City's All City Chorus. This chorus had the best singers from all high schools. Angela went to Hunter College High School. She graduated in 1972. Later, she studied at the Manhattan School of Music. She earned a music degree in 1976.
Her Music Career
Angela Bofill started singing professionally as a teenager. She performed with Ricardo Marrero & the Group. She also sang with the Dance Theater of Harlem chorus. A friend, jazz flutist Dave Valentin, introduced her to Dave Grusin and Larry Rosen. They worked for a jazz music company called GRP Records.
GRP Records signed Angela and produced her first album. It was called Angie and came out in 1978. People really liked Angie. It had a popular song called "This Time I'll Be Sweeter." Less than a year later, her second album, Angel of the Night, was released. This album was even more successful. It included songs like "What I Wouldn't Do (For the Love of You)" and "I Try." Angela Bofill was one of the first Latina singers to become successful in R&B and jazz music.
Angela performed a sold-out concert in New York City. This was part of the Newport Jazz Festival in 1980. She had a big band and a choir with her.
Later, Clive Davis, who led Arista Records, became interested in Angela. Angela moved to Arista Records for her next album. It was called Something About You (1981). This album tried to make her music more popular. It had songs like "Holdin' Out for Love." The next year, Angela released Too Tough. The main song, "Too Tough," became very popular. It reached number 5 on the R&B music chart. Another song, "Tonight I Give In," also did well.
Angela recorded two more albums with Arista Records. Then she moved to Capitol Records in the mid-1980s. Her album Intuition (1988) had her last big hit. It was a cover of "I Just Wanna Stop." She recorded three more albums after that. She also sang backup for other artists. Angela performed live concerts around the world. She also acted in stage plays.
After facing some health challenges, Angela returned to the stage. She created "The Angela Bofill Experience." In this show, she shared stories about her life and career. Other singers performed her famous songs. In 2023, Angela Bofill was honored. She was added to the Women Songwriters Hall of Fame.
