Angela Helen Clayton MBE (1959 – 8 January 2014) was a brilliant scientist who studied physics. She was known around the world for her work in areas like Nuclear Criticality Safety and Health Physics. Angela was also a strong supporter of rights for transgender people. She received an award called the MBE for her important work.

Angela Clayton's Work as a Physicist

Angela Clayton had a very impressive career. She was a leading expert in nuclear criticality safety. This field is about making sure that nuclear materials are handled safely to prevent accidents. She also worked in Health Physics, which focuses on protecting people from radiation.

Key Achievements in Science

Angela held many important roles. For several years, she was the Head of Criticality Safety at the Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE). This is a place where nuclear weapons are researched and made.

Her accomplishments included:

  • Leading the Criticality Safety team at AWE.
  • Being the Chairperson of the UK Working Party on Criticality.
  • Helping create an American National Standard for controlling special nuclear materials.
  • Taking part in a big international project to evaluate criticality safety.

In March 2011, Angela retired early due to health reasons. After retiring, she followed her other passions. She bought a large telescope and spent time on her lifelong love of astronomy. She also earned a law degree from the Open University in April 2009, graduating with top honors.

Angela Clayton was a dedicated advocate for transgender people. She worked to make sure everyone had equal rights and understanding.

Working for Transgender Rights

Angela began working with Press for Change in 1999. This organization helps improve the rights and lives of transgender people. She later became their vice-president.

She believed that trade unions could help promote equality for transgender people. Because of this, she became the first "trans observer" to the UK Trades Union Congress (TUC) LGBT Committee. This committee works on issues for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people.

Angela also played a key role in creating and putting into action the Gender Recognition Act 2004. This important law allows transgender people to legally change their gender.

Awards and Recognition

In June 2005, Angela was honored with an award. She was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE). This award was given to her "for services to gender issues," recognizing her important work for transgender rights.

Angela was also a speaker at the Greater London LGBT Organising Day in February 2008. In 2009, she helped write a paper called "Trans Data Position Paper" for the UK's National Statistics office. This paper helped improve how information about transgender people is collected.
