Angelica Rock facts for kids
Angelica Rock is a tiny, rocky island that pops out of the water in Buzzards Bay. It's part of the town of Fairhaven, Massachusetts. This small rock is owned by a private family. You can find it southwest of Sconticut Neck and Wilbur's Point.
Many sea birds live on Angelica Rock. There's also an old windmill structure there, but it doesn't work anymore.
Some people in Fairhaven call it "Angelica Island." But on official maps used by boats, it's known as "Angelica Rock."
History and Ownership
In the early 1970s, a man named Dr. Aris T. Papas bought Angelica Rock. He was a professor and a psychologist. Dr. Papas wanted to build a summer house on the island.
He and his son worked hard to build the windmill you see there today. They had to bring all the building materials to the island using a rowboat! The windmill actually worked for a while. However, a big storm hit the island a few months later and damaged it.
After the storm, the plans for the summer home were stopped. A concrete slab from that building project is still on the island.
Around the mid-1990s, a family member tried to sell the island. They asked for about $100,000, but no one bought it. Angelica Rock is now a well-known spot in the area. Many photographers enjoy taking pictures of it. The Papas family still owns the island today.
