Scientific classification

Angelica hendersonii is a special type of plant often called Henderson's angelica. It's a wild flower that grows along the west coast of the United States. You can find it from Washington all the way down to central California. This plant is known for its tall stems and fuzzy flowers.

What is Henderson's Angelica?

Henderson's angelica is a type of perennial herb. This means it lives for many years, not just one season. It has a main root, like a carrot, called a taproot. From this root, tall stems grow up to 1 to 2 meters high. That's about as tall as a grown-up!

Where Does Henderson's Angelica Grow?

This plant loves to live right by the ocean. It grows in places called "coastal sage scrub." This means it likes areas with low, bushy plants near the coastline. It needs the salty air and specific soil found in these coastal habitats.

What Does Henderson's Angelica Look Like?

The leaves at the bottom of the plant are quite large. They are made up of smaller, oval-shaped leaflets. Each leaflet can be up to 10 centimeters long. The edges of these leaflets are slightly toothed, and their undersides feel white and woolly.

The plant's flowers grow in fuzzy clusters. These clusters are called "compound umbels." Imagine a tiny umbrella shape made of many smaller flower clusters. Each main cluster can have up to 60 smaller groups of flowers.

After the flowers bloom, they create fruits. These fruits are like small, paired bodies, almost a centimeter long. Each one holds a tiny seed inside.
