Angelika Bunse-Gerstner facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Angelika Bunse-Gerstner is a German mathematician born in 1951. She is an expert in special areas of math called numerical linear algebra and control theory. Numerical linear algebra is about solving math problems using computers. Control theory helps us understand and design systems, like how a robot moves or how a plane flies.

Her Education and Career

Angelika Bunse-Gerstner studied at Bielefeld University. She earned her Ph.D. there in 1978. A Ph.D. is a very high university degree, showing she is an expert in her field. Her special research paper, called a dissertation, was about a math method to find "eigenvalues" of a matrix. This is a complex topic in math.

For many years, until 2017, she led a group of mathematicians at the University of Bremen. This group focused on "Numerics," which means using math to solve real-world problems with computers.

Her Book

She also wrote a textbook in German about numerical linear algebra. It was published in 1985 and she wrote it with Wolfgang Bunse.

Special Recognition

In 2017, a group called the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics honored her. They named her a "Fellow" because of her important work. This honor recognized her contributions to numerical linear algebra, control theory, and another area called model reduction. Being a Fellow means she is highly respected for her achievements in these fields.
