Potentilla angelliae is a very special and rare flowering plant. It belongs to the rose family. People also call it Angell cinquefoil or Boulder Mountain cinquefoil. This plant grows only in Utah, United States. You can find it on Boulder Mountain, which is part of the Aquarius Plateau.

What is Angell Cinquefoil?

Angell cinquefoil is a type of plant that blooms with yellow flowers. It is a perennial herb, meaning it lives for many years. Its stems can spread out or lie flat on the ground. These stems usually grow up to 11 centimeters long.

Plant Features

Each leaf on the Angell cinquefoil is divided into smaller parts. These smaller parts are called leaflets. The leaflets often have lobed or toothed edges. The plant's bright yellow flowers typically bloom in July.

Where Does It Grow?

This rare plant is found only in a specific area of Utah. It grows on Boulder Mountain. This mountain is part of the Aquarius Plateau. The plants live in rocky subalpine meadows. A subalpine zone is a high-altitude area just below the tree line. Here, the air is cooler and the growing season is shorter.

High Altitude Home

Angell cinquefoil grows at a very high elevation. It is found at about 11,000 feet above sea level. Other plants also grow in this habitat. One of them is a close relative called Potentilla concinna.

How Rare Is It?

Scientists know of only five places where this plant grows. Even though it's rare, there are quite a few individual plants. Experts estimate there are about 19,000 Angell cinquefoil plants in total. Protecting these areas helps keep this unique plant safe.
