Angelo "Anġlu" Farrugia (born 29 December 1955) is a Maltese politician. He is currently the Speaker of the House of Representatives of Malta. This means he is like the referee of the Maltese Parliament. He makes sure debates are fair and follow the rules.
Before this, he was a Member of Parliament. He also served as the Deputy Leader of the Labour Party.

His Family Life
Angelo Farrugia was born in Mosta, Malta. He is married to Carmen. They have a daughter named Caroline. Caroline is a Magistrate, which means she is a judge in Malta's law courts.
His Early Career
Before becoming a politician, Mr. Farrugia worked as a police officer. He served in the police force from 1977 to 1996. He reached the rank of Superintendent, which is a senior position.
Later, he went to the University of Malta to study law. He became a lawyer, also known as an advocate.
His Political Journey
Becoming a Member of Parliament
Angelo Farrugia was first elected to Parliament in 1996. A Member of Parliament (MP) represents the people in their area. They help make laws for the country.
He was re-elected several times, in 1998, 2003, and 2008. He worked on different committees in Parliament. For example, he helped review new laws.
Roles in the Labour Party
Between 1998 and 2008, Mr. Farrugia was a "Shadow Minister for Justice." This means he was part of the opposition party. He would comment on the government's plans for justice.
In 2008, he became the Deputy Leader of the Labour Party. He also spoke for the opposition on jobs and workers' rights.
Becoming Speaker of the House
In 2012, Mr. Farrugia stepped down from his role as Deputy Leader. He then decided not to run in the 2013 general election.
However, in April 2013, he was chosen for a very important role. He became the Speaker of the House of Representatives. He has held this position ever since.
Working with Other Countries
International Observer Missions
Mr. Farrugia has also worked with international groups. In 1996, he became the head of Malta's team for the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE).
He has traveled to many countries as an international observer. He watched elections to make sure they were fair. Some places he visited include Georgia, Palestine, and the United States. He also observed elections in Montenegro and Zambia.
Human Rights and Commonwealth
He is a member of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly's committee on human rights. This committee works to protect people's rights.
In 2016, he was chosen to lead the Small Branches network of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA). This group helps parliaments in smaller countries. These are countries with fewer than 500,000 people.
