Angie Maria Beckwith (born January 27, 1881 – died October 2, 1964) was an American scientist. She studied plant diseases, so she was known as a phytopathologist. She worked at a main plant health laboratory for the USDA in the 1920s. She worked under famous scientists like Erwin F. Smith and Florence Hedges.
A Scientist for Plants
Angie Maria Beckwith worked at the USDA's Bureau of Plant Industry. This was a government department focused on understanding and protecting plants. Her job was to study diseases that harmed plants.
In 1921, Angie was part of a team of more than twenty women scientists. They worked together in Smith's lab. Their main goal was to study a plant sickness called bacterial wilt. This disease affected new types of dry beans. Their research helped farmers learn how to protect their crops.
