Angus Mackay, 6th of Strathnaver facts for kids
Angus Mackay, 6th of Strathnaver (died 1403) was an important leader, known as the sixth chief, of the ancient Clan Mackay. This was a Scottish clan from the Scottish Highlands.
Who Was Angus Mackay?
Angus Mackay became the chief of his clan after a difficult time. His father, Donald Mackay, 5th of Strathnaver, and his grandfather, Iye Mackay, 4th of Strathnaver, were both killed in 1370. This happened at Dingwall Castle during a long-standing disagreement, called a feud, with William, the 5th Earl of Sutherland. So, Angus actually took over from his grandfather, Iye. Some historians say that the Earl of Sutherland was also killed in 1370 by the Mackays, who were seeking revenge.
During Angus Mackay's time as chief, the Clan Mackay was involved in some important events. For example, in 1391, men from Clan Mackay (sometimes called "Clan Morgan") supported Duncan Stewart. He was the son of the Earl of Buchan. They helped him when he led a raid into an area called the Braes of Angus. This event is known as the Raid of Angus.
Angus Mackay's Family
Angus Mackay, 6th of Strathnaver, married a daughter of Torquil MacLeod. Torquil was the chief of the Clan MacLeod of Lewis. Angus and his wife had two sons:
- Angus Du Mackay, 7th of Strathnaver: He became the next chief of the Clan Mackay after his father.
- Rorie Gald Mackay: He was also known as Rorie the Islander. This is because he was raised by his mother's family on the Isle of Lewis. Sadly, Rorie was killed at the Battle of Dingwall in 1411. He was fighting to support his brother Angus against Donald of Islay, Lord of the Isles.
