Donald Mackay, 5th of Strathnaver (died 1370) was an important leader of the ancient Clan Mackay. He was the fifth chief of this Scottish clan, which came from the Scottish Highlands.
A Chief's Early Life
Donald Mackay was the oldest son of Iye Mackay, 4th of Strathnaver, who was also a clan chief. In 1370, Donald and his father died together at Dingwall Castle in Ross-shire. They were killed by Nicholas Sutherland, 1st of Duffus, who was the brother of William, 5th Earl of Sutherland. This happened during a long-standing disagreement between the Clan Mackay and the Clan Sutherland.
Donald Mackay's Family
Donald Mackay, 5th of Strathnaver, had several children:
- Angus Mackay, 6th of Strathnaver: He became the next chief after his grandfather, Iye Mackay, 4th of Strathnaver.
- Huistean Du Mackay: He helped look after his nephew, Angus Du Mackay, 7th of Strathnaver, when Angus was too young to be chief.
- Martin Mackay: He moved to a place called Galloway. We don't know much more about him.
- Neil Mackay: He settled in Creich. His sons were Thomas Neilson Mackay, Neil Neilson Mackay, and Morgan Neilson Mackay.
- Thomas Neilson Mackay died in Inverness in 1426.
- Neil and Morgan Neilson Mackay married daughters of the Murray family from Aberscross. They tried to take over the lands of their cousin, Chief Angus Du Mackay, 7th of Strathnaver. However, they were defeated and died at the Battle of Drumnacoub. The Clan Mackay, led by Angus Du Mackay's son John Mackay, I of Aberach, won this battle.
- Neil Neilson Mackay's sons were John Bain, Angus, and Paul.
- John Bain moved to Caithness and started many Bain families.
- Angus was the ancestor of the Siol-Angus family line.
- Paul was the ancestor of the Polsons and some MacPhails.
Because of these family connections, names like Bain, Neilson, Paul, and Polson are considered septs (smaller family groups) of the Clan Mackay.
