Aniezo is a small village, also called a hamlet, in the beautiful region of Cantabria, Spain. It is part of the Cabezón de Liébana area. In 2009, about 33 people lived there. Aniezo is located high up, about 683 metres above sea level. It is also about 6.6 kilometers from the main town of Cabezón de Liébana.
History and Traditions
Aniezo is known for a special tradition. Many people believe that Beatus of Liebana, a very important religious figure, was born here.
The Fiesta of 'La Santuca'
Every year on May 2nd, Aniezo celebrates the 'La Santuca' fiesta. This celebration has been happening since the 1400s! During this fiesta, a special wooden statue of the Virgin Mary is carried.
The statue is taken in a long procession down the mountain. It travels all the way to the Santo Toribio de Liébana Monastery, which is about 15 kilometers away. This procession is known as the longest one in all of Spain.
