Anika Moa's Music Journey
Starting Out: Thinking Room and Stolen Hill (1998–2007)
In 1998, Anika Moa won an award at the Smokefreerockquest competition. She also received a scholarship to a music school. After making a demo tape, she signed a record deal with Warner Music in New Zealand and Atlantic Records in New York.
She moved to New York to record her first album, Thinking Room, which was released in September 2001. Her first song from the album, "Youthful", came out in July 2001 and reached number 5 on the New Zealand Singles Chart. Anika felt homesick and uncomfortable with how her manager promoted her. In 2002, she moved back to Auckland.
Her second album, Stolen Hill, was released on August 1, 2005. Anika said this album felt more "true to herself." The album became very popular and was certified gold. She toured New Zealand in October 2005. Anika also joined many other New Zealand musicians to sing on the song "Anchor Me." This song remembered the 20th anniversary of the bombing of the Rainbow Warrior ship.
New Success: In Swings the Tide and Love in Motion (2007–2012)
In October 2007, Anika Moa released her third album, In Swings The Tide. This album was a big success, going platinum and getting great reviews. For the first time, she produced the album all by herself. In 2009, The New Zealand Herald newspaper called Anika one of the "Top 10 Kiwi music successes of the past 10 years."
Anika Moa married Australian burlesque dancer Angela Fyfe in February 2010. Her partner inspired Anika's fourth album, Love in Motion, which came out in March 2010. This album reached number four on the charts. The couple welcomed twins the following year.
To support her album, Anika went on a tour across New Zealand from October to December 2010. She has also worked with other New Zealand artists like SJD and Bic Runga. She sometimes performs with the band Dimmer and has also worked as a DJ under the name DJ Unika.
